Troop refers to a unit of soldiers; troupe refers to any group of performers. Both words come from the French troupe (a band of people). While the plural troupes refers to multiple, distinct performing groups, the plural troops may be used for soldiers, often with a preceding adjective: The naval troops landed on the beach, but the airborne troops have yet to arrive.
